I, the Starship Factory, (it's not a huge factory) have been building model kit sets on and off for around 30 years and have been a New Zealand member of the International Plastic Modellers Society (IPMS) since 2005. For me, modelling is purely a hobby, although I have occasionally charged a nominal fee to people who have needed repairs made to their precious collectibles. (see JUNK YARD)
My time is very unevenly divided between my hobby, and being: a full-time dad to two young children; a part-time tutor at an Early Childhood Education centre (pre-school); a free-lance graphic artist, and; a part-time custodian of a local hostel. Not to mention a supposed full-time house maid and maintenance man to a 100 year old home! This leaves about 0.05% of my waking hours to be afforded my miniature obsessions!
All hope of ever "growing up and finding a real man's hobby" has long been abandoned, and instead a new hope has risen, - the hope and dream that I might finish building all my collection before senility, or death, takes me over. Even with my typically poor grasp of mathematics I can calculate that this goal is simply not achievable. Given that in one year I can barely turn out one model, the Starship Factory, (and if it were a factory business would be long bankrupt!!), would have to be around for at least another 80 to 90 years! (...a good argument to "Live long, and prosper!")
However, not dwelling on the negative, I resolve to at least keep dreaming, to share my passion with as many people around me and, to continue building a model future.
